Lets Talk About Shears

I’ve had many different shears in my career but I would mostly buy Joewell brand (about $150-300). They were in my price range and I usually would buy on sale when I would get a pair of thinning shears free. Last year was the first time I decided to spend BIG MONEY on shears!

I met my friend at a hairshow and onne of her missions was to buy GOOD shears.

We always have missions at the shows, otherwise you get caught up in all the ooohs and ahhhs booths!

We went to all the shear booths and asked them to tell us about their shears.

The first big name company (which shall remain nameless) that we visited we were approached by a rep (he was very attractive). I told him that my friend is looking to buy new shears. I asked him tell us about their least expensive and your most expensive. The very attractive man said “I wouldn’t even bother with the cheapest, but let me show you these…”

They were $800!

He didn’t know us, nor did he know our budget. But you could guarantee his pay was commission based! We politely looked and walked away. I said to my friend “I would never buy shears from someone who doesn’t stand behind ALL of the shears they sell.”

After talking with all the companies we narrowed it down to two companies that were informative, yet not pushy. One was from a cutting class I had previously taken, Karg, and the other was Shark Fin.

Karg had a great class with fun tips on how to use certain shears, and the sales people had a lot of flair when showing you their shears.

But in the end Shark Fin won us over with their customer service. They showed us each shear, expained the difference in price versus quality and sold us on a pair of swivel shears. The owner of Shark Fin was a lefty (so is my friend) so they had an instant connection! They were so kind after my friend made her purchase, they also sent me home with a free razor and thinning shear just for helping her out! After that I was sold. I went straight home and obsessed over new shears for about a week…called the company and ordered my own! My first expensive pair $800. I was dying…

I bought the Shark Fin Monarch Swivel. This shear is made with Hitachi ATS-314 Japanese Steel ( which truly meant nothing to me at the time) But in laymans terms- This is a very high quaity stainless steel. It is a harder steel so it will hold an edge longer and is more durable than the more popular lesser quality steels (410, 420, 440a,440c, etc)

Shark Fin, like many shear companies, offers a lifetime warranty free from defects in manufacturing. One other caveat to the warranty is that the shears can only be sharpened by a Shark Fin Certified sharpener. That being said, Damion had to get certified!

Let’s talk a little about what is awesome about Shark Fins. Every shear has a great ergonomic design. They also have a patented custom finger fitting system. This allows a custom fit for each individual stylist for perfect control, comfort and grip. I chose the swivel thumb for even more comfort. The swivel allows the hand, wrist, arm to be in a more natural position. Which leads to less pain and fatigue and reduces the risk of repetitive motion injuries like carpal tunnel. All of these qualities will extend my hair cutting career! Since using these shears I haven’t had any wrist, finger, arm, or shoulder pain! I didn’t truly notice I wasn’t having pain until I tried another pair of straight shears and started experiencing finger pain and numbness.

I cut most of my clients dry, so these shears are great for that. They glide easily through the hair and they make nice sharp clean lines. The only thing I don’t use them for is bangs. I like a smaller, narrower shear for those.

Supreme Sharpening is a distributor for several different companies with Shark Fin being one of them! Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in Shark Fin or any other swivel shears. We carry quite a few in many different price ranges!
