My Love For Thinning Shears

So many people are afraid of these babies, yet they are one of my FAVORITE tools!

Thinning shears can be used in so many ways!

They soften lines, create volume, remove bulk, add movement, bevel edges, add texture or funk to a short sassy cut, blend a mans cut or clipper cut. I could go on for days…

You can do an entire haircut with the right thinning shear!

One of my favorite ways to thin hair is, are you ready for this…?

AT THE SCALP

“gasp”

It’s great way to remove bulk!. Trust me, it’s a game changer! I know,I know…. it’s against the rules. But I think we hairstylists are supposed to break the rules! Right?

Now I’m not talking about thinning the entire head at the scalp, but below the crown or normal fall of hair. Its a game changer. Thinning this way removes that clumpy bulk you have with thick hair and creates movement and swing to the hair. I use this technique on ALL of my bobs!

I have clients who feared the thinning shear. Their previous stylists had thinned like we were taught in beauty school 2-3 inches from the ends. That most times will will give a mushroom effect as hair grows out

Once I showed these clients this technique, they come back asking for more.

My workhorse thinning shear is a 30 tooth thinner. It removes a decent amount of bulk and blends without to much of a line. I like to finish men’s cuts with these and I use them to remove bulk on thick haired clients. I will even point cut with them for movement through the ends.

Shisato Prism 3000 30 Tooth Thinner

My other favorite is the Double Teeth Thinner. These shears are new to me and I can’t believe I’ve gone so long without knowing about these gems! They thin without leaving a line! If you are new to using thinning shears, these are for you. These are great to soften or blend lines, remove a little bulk, add texture or movement. They are truly amazing!

Mirage B-30 Double Teeth No Line Thinner

So now I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone, and try something new! If you’re already comfortable with thinning and you have any extra tips and tricks, we would love to hear them!

XOXO,
